Admission to Undergraduate Engineering Programs at NITs, IIITs, Other centrally funded Technical Institutions, Institutions funded by several participating State Governments, and several other Institutions shall involve the Joint Entrance Examination, JEE (Main). The JEE (Main) will also be an eligibility test for the JEE (Advanced), which the candidate has to take if he/she is aspiring for admission to the undergraduate programmes offered by the IITs.
CBSE has announced the details of the first Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Main 2013. The information regarding various aspects of JEE Main like eligibility criteria, paper pattern,syllabus,marking scheme, final merit list etc., has been clearly spelt out by the CBSE, who has been entrusted with the responsibility of conducting JEE Main 2013.
General perception of the student community is that JEE Main is AIEEE in its new avatar. AIEEE in its previous form had no bearing on the IIT admissions, had given no weightage to the class XII board marks. But from 2013, JEE Main, apart from the admissions into the NITs,IIITs,possibly other CFTIs, is also the first tier of the two-tier IIT selection process.

1.What is Joint Entrance Examination?
Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) is the all India entrance examination conducted for the admissions into the Engineering courses. From 2013,under the direction of MHRD, Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) is being conducted in two parts, JEE-MAIN and JEE-ADVANCED . JEE MAIN is for the admission into NITs,IIITs and possibly CFTIs and other participating institutes. JEE ADVANCED is for the admission into IITs only.
2. Who are eligible to appear for JEE MAIN 2013?
Candidate must have passed in final examination of 10+2 (Class XII) or its equivalent qualifying examination. Those appearing in 10+2 (Class XII) final or equivalent examination in 2013 may also appear in JEE(MAIN) 2013 provisionally.
Candidates who are aspirants for NITs, IIITs, CFTIs , IITs and ISM Dhanbad - for one or more than one of them - must confirm to the eligibility criteria of the relevant institutions.
Candidates are allowed maximium of 3 consecutive attempts.
JEE MAIN 2013, candidates who passed +2 exam in 2011 or2012 or appearing in +2 in 2013 are only eligible to appear.
3.What is the age limit to apply for JEE-Main exam ?
Only those candidates whose date of birth falls on or after October 01, 1988 are eligible. However, in the case of Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST) and Persons with Disabilities (PWD) candidates, upper age limit is relaxed by 5 years, i.e. SC, ST and PWD candidates who were born on or after October 01, 1983 are eligible. Date of birth as recorded in the Secondary Education Board/University certificate only will be taken as authentic.
4. What is the mode of the examination?
For Paper 1(B.E/B.Tech courses), it is in both off and online modes.
For Paper 2(B.Arch/B.Planning),it is in offline mode only.
5. What are the dates of the JEE MAIN 2013?
Offline Exam - 7th April 2013
Online Exam - Between 8th April to 30th April 2013(the exact dates will be announced soon)
6. From when are the JEE MAIN 2013 forms available?
JEE MAIN 2013 forms are available at the website,wwww.jeemain-edu.in. from Nov,1st,2012. The forms have to be filled up online only since they are not available offline. CBSE has announced the setting up of facilitation centres that will assist students in the online form filling without any charge.

7. What are the names of the relevant qualifying examinations?
The +2 level examination in the 10+2 pattern of examination of any recognized Central/State Board of Secondary Examination, such as Central Board of Secondary Education, New Delhi, and Council for Indian School Certificate Examination, New Delhi
Intermediate or two-year Pre-University Examination conducted by a recognized Board/University.
Final Examination of the two-year course of the Joint Services Wing of the National Defence Academy.
Any Public School/Board/University Examination in India or in foreign countries recognized by the Association of Indian Universities as equivalent to 10+2 system.
H.S.C. Vocational Examination.
A pass grade in the Senior Secondary School Examination conducted by the National Open School with a minimum of five subjects.
3 or 4-year diploma recognized by AICTE or a State Board of Technical Education.
8.What is state code of eligibility ?
State Code of eligibility means the Code of the State from where a candidate has passed +2 examination by virtue of which he/she becomes eligible to appear in the JEEMain for admission to B.E/B.Tech and B.Arch/B. Planning Courses of the institutions/Colleges of the States/UT.
Indian nationals passing the equivalent qualifying examination from any institution abroad, the State of Eligibility will be determined on the basis of permanent address given in the Passport of the candidate.

9. What is the pattern of JEE MAIN 2013?
Paper 1 - for B.E/B.TECH courses
Duration: 3 hrs
Objective type questions with equal weightage to Physics, Chemistry & Mathematics
Four options with single correct answer
Negative marking - for each incorrect response, one fourth (1/4) of the total marks allotted to the question would be deducted. No response will mean no deduction of marks.
Paper 2 - for B.ARCH/B. PLANNING
Mathematics - Part I - objective questions
Aptitude Test - Part II - objective questions

10.How will the All India final merit list of JEE MAIN 2013 be arrived at?
A candidate's All India Rank(AIR) will be a combination of 40% weightage to normalised 10+2 or other equivalent qualifying examination and 60% weightage to his JEE MAIN score.
11.What are the reservation rules for JEE-Main Exam 2013 ?
As per Government of India rules candidates belonging to certain categories are admitted to seats reserved for them based on relaxed criteria.These categories are:
Other Backward Classes (OBC) if they belong to Non-Creamy Layer (NCL)
Scheduled Castes (SC)
Scheduled Tribes (ST)
Persons with Physical Disability (PD)
Benefit of reservation shall be given only to those classes/castes/tribes which are in the respective central list published by the Govt of India.
12. What are the institutes that require an AIR JEE MAIN rank?
All NITs,IIITs admit students based on their AIR JEE MAIN ranks . Some of the CFTIs and other participating institutes may also use the JEE MAIN AIR ranks.
13.How about the engineering colleges of a state? Do they admit students based on the AIR JEE MAIN rank? Will the same weightage be given to the 10+2 board Marks and the JEE MAIN score?
In case any State opts to admit students in the engineering Colleges affiliated to state Universities where States require separate merit list to be provided based on relative weightages adopted by the states, then the merit list shall be prepared with such relative weightages as may be indicated by States. The examination will be conducted in the Regional Languages of the State(s) on the requests of such State(s)
14. Will a student with AIR JEE MAIN automatically qualify to write JEE ADVANCED(the second part of the examination required to get into IITs)?
NO. Only the top 1.5 lakh candidates of JEE MAIN from all categories will be eligible to attempt JEE ADVANCED.
15.Is the JEE MAIN syllabus similar to AIEEE 2012 syllabus? What is the syllabus for JEE ADVANCED?
The JEE MAIN syllabus is same as last year's AIEEE syllabus. The syllabus of JEE ADVANCED will be made available shortly at http://jee.iitd.ac.in . Both are expected to be almost similar but students need to be cautious and should refer to the official syllabi of both the exams.

17.Is the use of calculator for calculations in the JEE-MAIN exam permitted?
NO. Students are not permitted to use electronic devices like mobile phone, calculator, iPod, etc. and materials like log table, book, notebook, etc. will not be allowed into the examination hall.
In pursuance of Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India, Notification, the Joint Entrance Examination (Main) - 2013 will be conducted by the JEE Apex Board for admission to Undergraduate Engineering Programmes in NITs, IIITs and other Centrally Funded Technical Institutions etc. Now, AIEEE will be known as JEE (Main) and IIT - JEE as JEE (Advanced).

For admission to NITs, Centrally Funded Technical Institutions (CFTIs) like IIITs etc. and other participating Institutions, the merit/rank list shall be prepared based on 40% weightage to school Boards marks in class 12th or equivalent examination and 60% weightage to JEE(Main). The weightage to school Board/Equivalent examination marks shall be considered only after normalization.
Mode of Examination
The Paper-1 (described below) of JEE (Main) will be conducted in two separate modes i.e. Offline (Pen and Paper Based Examination) mode and Online (Computer Based Examination) mode. The Paper-2 of JEE (Main) will be conducted only in Pen and Paper based examination mode. A candidate will opt for either Pen and Paper Based or Computer Based examination modes for Paper-1 only.

JEE (Main) – 2013 shall have two papers, Paper-1 and Paper-2. Candidates may take Paper-1, or Paper-2, or both as per the course(s) they are seeking admission to.
